Rotorua Boys’ High School is proud to appoint a new Director of Basketball.

‘Old Boy”, Theo Tait brings a wealth of experience and energy to his new role as Director of Basketball at Rotorua Boys’ High School. Active in this sport as both an athlete and a coach for over 25 years, Theo’s involvement has taken him all over the globe in various roles. His major coaching roles at home have included; the NZ Junior Tall Blacks Assistant Coach (qualifying for the World U19’s), NZ U19 Boys’ Head Coach (obtaining a Gold Medal at the Oceania Games in Australia) and NZ U19 Maori Mens’ Assistant/Manager for their Tour to Tonga. Theo also has experience as a High Performance Coach.

In the National Basketball League he was the Auckland Stars Assistant Coach and General Manager for 4 years, winning 2 NBL titles and 2 second placings during his 4 years with the Auckland Stars. He was the Assistant Coach for the Hawkes Bay Hawks for 2 years, achieving the finals in his first year and working with his friend and mentor, Head Coach, Tab Baldwin.

Theo has ties to Rotorua and to Rotorua Boys’ High School, being born in Rotorua, and an “Old Boy’ of the school. He has represented the city for basketball in many age group and senior Representative teams. He was granted a Junior Tall Black trial, and enjoyed a brief stint with the then Waikato Titans (Warriors). He also had many years with the Rotorua 2nd Division Senior Men’s teams, as both a player and a coach. Theo’s son attended Rotorua Boys’ High School and during that time, Theo coached the RBHS Junior A and Senior A teams. Theo says it was that experience which fired his enthusiasm to pursue coaching further, and he moved to Auckland to take up a role with the Auckland’s Stars Franchise in the New Zealand Basketball League as the General Manager and Assistant Coach. “My application for a position as a Coach on the Basketball NZ Koru Tour started my journey into the BBNZ coaching of age groups” he says. “ I am honoured to be able to share my experiences with the young men of Rotorua Boys’ High School and to help develop skills towards their aspirations in the sport of Basketball.”
